I discovered these amazing pictures via Moby's architecture blog. The post was titled "Abandoned Yugoslavia Monuments that look like they're from the Future". What a fitting title. It's always worth checking what Moby is up to, imo. I was mesmerized when I saw these giant abstract structures, so I tried to find out more. These monuments were commissioned by Tito in the 1960s and 1970s to commemorate sites where WWII battles took place, or where concentration camps stood. After the Yugoslav Republic dissolved in early 1990s, they were completely abandoned. The pictures are from the Belgian photographer Jan Kempenaers, who dedicated an entire book to these Spomeniks ("Monuments").
